Independent Study on Origami Folding
Currently, there are different types of floating platforms (or “pool floatie”) for leisure activities in swimming pools. However, they are not made with portability in mind. Hence, we could not just purchase the inflatable platforms directly from the market.
Why origami?
According to Kshirsagar et al, origami structures can enable geometries to change its size back and forth upon external stimulations (inflation in our case).
Thus, origami-inspired inflatables can contribute to a much smaller and more compact package which, in turn, enables more convenient deliveries.

Research questions
1. What is the suitable origami folding?
2. Can the design still inflate after the folding?

Methodology: Tools
-
Solidworks
-
Online origami folding simulator https://origamisimulator.org/
The origami simulator is developed by Ghassaei et al as part of a project. They used the bar and hinge model as the main mechanics for the application just like many other origami simulators (like grasshopper). Main benefit of this system is that is allows user to import a SVG image. Blue lines indicate valley folds, red lines for mountain folds and black lines for boundary.
03
Methodology: Procedures I
CAD models with Solidworks:
Create a rough shape of the flotation device and give dimensions to it.
04
Methodology: Procedures II
Folding pattern:
Taking reference with the traditional origami box, a SVG image is made for a simulation in the online origami simulator
04
Methodology: Procedures III
Physical testing:
Folding the actual product and inflate it while folded
(size reduced from 80cm x 80cm x 23 cm to 20 cm x 15 cm x 10 cm)
Conclusion
This research is generally a success and a highly integral part of the FloodUU system as the origami structure can significantly reduce the size of the deflated first-aid platform.
With a smaller size, delivery and storage of such devices are made easier and more convenient as they become more compact; at the same time, users can better handle the flotation device. By deploying this flotation device, flood victims can finally get immediate aid and a temporary barrier from open water.
